Printing digitally means avoiding setup costs compared to traditional offset printing. Small print runs are economical, materials can be produced in smaller quantities and with shorter lead times. There is no need for big expensive production runs that then need to be stored in a warehouse until they become obsolete.

This graph illustrates the difference in costs between offset and digital printing per item: There are high setup costs for offset, but with bigger volume runs it becomes the more cost effective printing method. Of course there are a number of other factors that matter, like the required print quality and stock availability.
